Are Puppy Mills Legal in Texas
Since June 2016, Bailing Out Benji has had a team of volunteers active in the Austin area. These wonderful advocates work tirelessly to educate about the connection between the pet store and the puppy mill while pursuing local retail bans in their area. If you would like to get involved, please contact our team. We all need to put an end to this cruel puppy mill industry! The bill is primarily a blow to Petland, the only major pet store company in Texas that still sells animals known to come from puppy mills. One of the biggest questions we receive is, “Why don`t you ban puppy mills?” The new law would make it illegal to sell puppies from puppy mills to pet stores. Instead, companies should source from animal control authorities, animal shelters, animal rescues or licensed breeders. Fortunately, six Texas communities have already passed similar laws. The bill aims to crack down on puppy mills and prevent widespread euthanasia among cats and dogs. We are far from this atrocity in our daily lives. However, those cute puppies you see in stores are often products of this ruthless company known as puppy mills. Statistics from the Humane Society of the United States show that 2.6 million puppies sold each year come from puppy mills and about 500,000 dogs are kept in puppy mills for breeding purposes.
In a statement, Patterson noted that “about 2 million puppies sold each year in the United States come from puppy mills, while 2 to 3 million puppies and cats are euthanized each year by animal shelters. Commercially bred dogs often live in terrible conditions and suffer from a number of diseases that are often unknown to the consumer. Although 24 of the top 25 pet stores already adhere to the human model, Texas must apply a minimum standard so that new pet owners can be sure that their dog or cat has been raised and treated with care. The Dog and Cat Breeders Act, passed in the last session, targets what advocates call “puppy mills.” The law requires commercial cat and dog breeders to be licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations, provide minimum standards for care, and undergo inspections. Otherwise, they will have to pay fines. ❌ If the puppy sold is less than eight weeks old, stopping puppy mills is an important goal for dog parents around the world. And a big part of that is preventing pet stores from selling dogs. But banning the sale of puppies is much easier said than done, and unfortunately, many people continue to resist puppy mill bans. So the state of Texas is doing what it can to end puppy mills as soon as possible. Every step towards the end of puppy mills seems to be a step forward for dog lovers. But unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way. Many government officials resisted, saying there was no reason to pass the law.
While Texas isn`t one of the worst states in the country when it comes to puppy mills, it`s no stranger to the commercial dog breeding industry. The Lone Star State is home to more than 118 puppy mills, and some of them are still among the worst in the entire country. Below, we`d like to introduce some of the worst puppy mills in the state of Texas to raise awareness of the issue. Patterson said the bill is about pet stores that buy from puppy mills — plants that are often located outside of Texas and see small puppies shipped across state borders for more than a dozen hours. In 2021, after intense popular lobbying and from THLN and THLN supporters, the Texas Sunset Commission decided to maintain the Texas Licensed Breeders Program and continue to stop the operation of puppy mills throughout Texas. When buying a puppy, pay attention to these common red flags to avoid: For more information on aspca`s efforts to combat cruelty at puppy mills across the country, see www.aspca.org. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) today thanked Governor Rick Perry for signing House Bill (HB) 1451, which initiates oversight of large commercial breeding facilities known as puppy mills.
